5 key ways to a better working life in manufacturing
Learning from the father - man first
Much of the wisdom of working life is passed down from generation to generation. Tarja's father taught her early on that the meaning of work comes from working together, being honest and caring for others.
While many people talk about processes, efficiency and metrics, Tarja's father talked about about people. That good work only happens when people are allowed to be human with each other: to trust, to question, to make mistakes and to correct.
“If people are doing well, work is doing well.”
”Success comes when all stakeholders are heard, seen and treated fairly.”
And these thoughts still carry to this day. The world of work is constantly changing, and the success of organisations increasingly depends on well-rounded, motivated and skilled people.
The Finnish workplace values honesty, meaningfulness and working together - “Working together makes a good result” is a proverb that still holds true today. Here are five key ways to improve working atmosphere and results in practice.
1. Invest in wellbeing and safety - for real, not on paper
Processes are important, but people make them possible. When they do well, quality and safety follow. Ergonomic work equipment, clear processes and fair management are strong building blocks for a safe and meaningful working environment.
With tools that support the work and processes that everyone can understand, errors and absenteeism are reduced. And fair management builds trust and confidence... “Honesty inherits the earth”, as the old saying goes. Well-being at work is not just a cost, but an investment that is reflected in everyday life and results.
2. Luo relevance and transparency
People are better when they know, why does, not only what.
Everyone wants to know why their work is important and how it contributes to the whole. Clear goals, honest and fair collaboration and celebrated successes together create understanding, motivation and a spirit that can't be bought.
“Shared joy is the best joy” - this is particularly true in working life.
3. Develop skills and inclusion
When people are given a say, they also take responsibility and become more engaged. Working life requires continuous development. Provide training and opportunities to influence decisions - this is how initiative and innovations are growing. Inclusion is not just a rhetoric, but a reality: people want to participate and put forward their ideas. “Knowledge breeds pain - and innovation”, as you might say with a twinkle in your eye.
Skills grow from discussion, experimentation and being noticed by the employee: my thoughts and ideas are taken into account here.
4. Build psychological safety
Psychological safety means that everyone has the courage to voice their ideas and problems without fear of being judged. When there is trust and goodwill in the workplace, this is how the best insights and solutions are born.
“No one who asks will stray from the path” - encourage employees to ask questions and discuss, as an open atmosphere promotes learning and development. Psychological safety is the secret weapon of a successful team.
5. Lead people, not just metrics
Metrics tell us about the current situation, but future results are built on people's motivation and enthusiasm. A good leader sees the people behind the metrics and understands that results come from working together, not just counting.
“A good leader goes ahead, but stays close” - building trust and motivation through example and presence. So focus on the people, as they are the organisation's most important asset.
In summary
By investing in wellbeing, relevance, competence, psychological safety and people management, you build a strong foundation for sustainable success. So take care of people, and the work will pay off.
Man before process. Trust before metrics. Fairness before fancy management models.
